“You’re the ultimate prepper.”
Those words made me tilt my head and smile. I was at a children’s birthday party with a good friend. He is a prepper.
Do you know what a prepper is? Popularized by recent reality shows like “Doomsday Preppers,” preppers are people who feel the need to be prepared for unknown future disasters. Are you prepared for a hurricane or flood? Do you have spare food, water, batteries – a generator?
Preppers take that kind of preparation to another level. Preppers prepare not only for hurricanes, but also for the fall of the world’s economy, a violent overthrow of our government, major climatic shifts, zombie apocalypses and the end of the world.
Preppers usually have hidden arsenals of weapons, food and fuel. They know how to purify their own water and grow their own vegetables. They have get-away vehicles and safe houses. Preppers try to be prepared for any and every major catastrophe that might come their way.
As I said, my buddy is a prepper. While I spoke with him at the party, he introduced me to a group of his friends. They were talking about knives and guns. I asked them, “Are you guys preppers, too?” They all nodded and smiled. Then one asked me, “How about you?”
“No, I’m a pastor.”
“You’re the ultimate prepper,” he told me with a smile.
Christians are preppers. No, most of us don’t have stockpiles of food or weapons hidden in secret compartments under our homes. Most of us don’t know how to purify water with a sock or grow organic vegetables from a garbage pile, but we are preppers.
In fact, we are doomsday preppers. When the end of the world comes, weapons and survival training aren’t going to do you any good. The end of the world is not going to be a major climatic shift which leaves mankind struggling to survive. The end of the world is not going to be a meteor which wipes out most of the world’s population. The end of the world is going to be the end of the world.
In a flash, in the blink of an eye, Jesus will come. Everyone will see him. People won’t be running around wondering what is happening. Everyone will know immediately. God will gather all people together. He will raise the dead (don’t think zombie apocalypse, though). And then he will judge all people.
Books will be opened in which are written everything we have ever thought, said and done. Just one sin, one mistake, one poor choice, means a guilty verdict and an eternity in the prison of hell. For many, the last day will be doomsday. It will catch them unprepared.
As Christians, however, we are prepared. We are prepared, not because we are better than other people – not because we don’t have any sins. We are prepared because Jesus loved us so much he suffered our punishment in our place. We are prepared because God has justified us (literally, “declared us innocent”) through faith in Jesus. We are forgiven. When Jesus comes in the end of the world, he is coming to take us to heaven. All who believe in him are prepared.
Christians are the ultimate doomsday preppers. In fact, God now sends you and me to help prepare others. You don’t have to know about weapons or survival techniques to prepare someone for the end of the world. You just have to know about Jesus and his love. So share what you know. Help others be prepared. Be the ultimate prepper.
