For Such a Time as This

Esther was a young, Jewish orphan living in ancient Persia. When she was a teenager, King Xerxes, ruler of the mighty Persian Empire grew angry with his wife, Queen Vashti, and deposed her.

A search was made for a replacement. The most beautiful maidens in the empire were brought before the king. He chose Esther.

Esther’s is truly a Cinderella story. Seemingly overnight, she went from poor orphan to queen of the most powerful empire in the world.

Soon, however, one of the king’s top advisers convinced the emperor to exterminate the Jews of his kingdom. Esther found herself caught between a rock and a hard place. If she went to her husband and asked for mercy for the Jews, she could lose everything. If she said nothing, her people – her own flesh and blood – would be wiped from the face of the earth.

As she struggled with her moral dilemma, her cousin Mordecai sent her a message: “Who knows but that you have come to a royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14).

For such a time as this. Esther’s life was not a series of coincidences and happenstance. It wasn’t by chance that her family was carried off into exile. It wasn’t a twist of fate that her parents died when she was young. It wasn’t a stroke of luck that she was chosen to be queen of an empire.

God’s hand powerfully and lovingly maneuvered the events of Esther’s life in order to protect his people from annihilation. If he hadn’t saved his people through Esther, they would never have returned to Israel. If he hadn’t saved his people through Esther, our Savior Jesus would never have been born.

Sometimes it feels like we are victims of fate. When tragedy strikes and the world seems out of control, we can begin to feel like life is meaningless. We look around and can see no purpose to our existence.

Have you ever felt like your life is one big accident? Have you ever felt like you have no purpose?

Each year at this time, I make a point to watch Frank Capra’s classic, It’s a Wonderful Life. The movie’s main character, George Bailey, felt that his life was meaningless. He thought the world would have been better off if he had never existed.

So God sent the angel Clarence to show George what the world would have been like if he had never been born. George was allowed to see all the lives that he had touched and helped and saved. His life had tremendous purpose and value.

So does yours. God has you here for such a time as this. He has worked the events of your life to bring you to this point. He has placed people in your life whom you can help and encourage – to whom you can show God’s love in Jesus.

It is no coincidence you have the family you have. It is no coincidence you work with the people you do. It is no coincidence you live in the town you do next door to the people you do. It is for such a time as this.

You may at times struggle to understand God’s purpose for your life, but never doubt that there is a purpose. God has placed you here at this time to serve him, to help those around you, to be a beacon shining the light of his love to the world.

You are here for such a time as this.
