God is Watching

On August 25, 2010, I signed up for Facebook. Over the last four years, our Facebook page has served as a wonderful communication tool for our church and my ministry.

There is one problem, though. Sometimes people forget they have invited their pastor to see what they are posting. Every so often, they write something they shouldn’t or use bad language. When that happens, I usually write them a private message: “You know I am reading this, right?”

One young lady once wrote me back, “Sorry, pastor. I forgot you were watching.”

“I forgot you were watching.” So often in our lives, we forget that God is watching. God is watching when you are sitting in the backseat of your boyfriend’s car. God is watching when you sit alone at your house drinking yourself unconscious. God is watching as you glare at those images on the computer screen.

God is watching.

He sees all you do. You can’t hide it. You can’t deny it. But, thankfully, you can repent of it. You can ask God to forgive your “secret sins” with the confidence that he has and will always forgive you because of Jesus.

If you ever saw the movie The Passion of the Christ, you probably grimaced at the violent torments which Jesus suffered on the day he died. What no human eye could see, however, was what our Savior suffered at the hand of God the Father. On that cross, God punished his Son for all sins of all people of all time – including all of your secret sins that no one else can see. God sees them. He knows what you have done. Yet he forgives you because of Jesus.

God is watching.

Remember that next time you are alone with your boyfriend. Remember that next time you sit down at your computer. Remember that as you crack open your first beer after work. God is watching. Hopefully that truth will serve as helpful reminder as you struggle against your secret sins.

But even more importantly, I hope you also find great comfort in that truth. You see, it is a good thing God is watching, because that means he is watching over you.

God is watching.

When you feel alone or afraid, find peace in the fact that your heavenly Father is always watching over you. When you are in danger or in doubt, be still and know that your Savior God is there. Wherever you go, whatever you do, the all-powerful Lord of the universe is watching over you. As the old gospel hymn joyfully confesses, “My constant friend is he: His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.” What a wonderful comfort it is to know that God is watching!

Our church still maintains an active Facebook page. If you have a chance, check us out (Redeemer Lutheran Church, Edna, Texas). I would love to add you to our group of friends. But if you choose me as your friend on Facebook, don’t forget I will be watching. Even more importantly, though, never ever forget God is watching!

Thankfully God is always watching me through the cross of Jesus. Keeping that in mind helps me live in grace and not in fear.
    Enjoy your posts.

Thanks, Aaron! Isn’t that what is interesting about the truth that God is watching us? It is at the same time a preaching of law and gospel. When we’re doing something wrong, remember: God is watching. But when we are afraid, when we feel alone, never forget: God is watching. Thanks for your comment.

Isn’t there a ‘meme’ about character like this? “A sign of good character is doing the right thing even when no one is watching…” The same is true for doing what is God pleasing, even if no one else sees. But then we go and put our sins out there for all to see and even click LIKE for us. What is up with that???
